Artist Statement

My work is driven by the timeless call of the Explorer — that primal, unyielding urge to push beyond the horizon, to venture where maps end and mystery begins. I trace the restless pull toward the unknown, where familiar landscapes dissolve into fragments of memory, and enigmatic, dark romantic figures emerge from the deepest shadows like silent guides or half-remembered dreams. Each canvas becomes a living map of longing — meticulously carved from raw wilderness, untamed wonder, and the quiet ache of what lies just out of reach. Through paint, I chart the liminal edges where the outer world blurs into the interior self: vast, fog-shrouded mountains that mirror the soul’s hidden peaks; twilight forests thick with secrets; desolate shores where the sea whispers promises of both peril and revelation. These are not mere scenes — they are invitations. I beckon viewers to step across the threshold of the familiar, to abandon the safety of the known path, and to wander fearlessly into the terrain of their own unspoken desires, buried fears, and dormant possibilities. I paint as an act of exploration itself — seeking out the sublime in obscurity, hunting beauty amid the ambiguous and the shadowed. My brush follows the quiet, transformative moments that flicker on the borders between fear and exhilaration, desire and surrender, discovery and loss. In these in-between spaces, where light barely touches the dark, I uncover glimpses of profound truth: the way longing can carve us open, how the unknown can both terrify and liberate, and how every journey outward is ultimately a homecoming to the vast, uncharted wilderness within. This is the heart of my practice — an endless expedition into the sublime unknown, where every stroke is a step further into wonder, every shadow a portal, and every viewer, for a moment, becomes a fellow explorer.

Bio

Rachel Cole’s artistic journey is one of bold exploration and self-realisation. Born and raised in a working-class town in northern England, she always felt the pull of distant horizons. In her mid-twenties, she emigrated to Australia, where her passion for renovation and interior design took root and flourished. More recently, she and her husband relocated to the wilds of Tasmania. There, they spent a year meticulously designing and hand-building their unique home—a testament to their shared vision and determination. With expansive blank walls awaiting life, Rachel embraced the moment to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an artist. As she reflected on her new studio: “If I build it, I will become”—a self-fulfilling prophecy that propelled her forward. This leap of faith led her to enrol in the renowned Mastery Program at the Milan Art Institute, an intensive 12-month online course renowned for helping artists master technique, discover their unique style, and build sustainable careers. Today, Rachel works full-time from her Tasmanian studio, drawing endless inspiration from the island’s dramatic wilderness—its misty forests, shadowed peaks, and ever-shifting light—as well as the depths of her own imagination. Her paintings draw viewers toward the unknown: landscapes that bleed into shadow, where dark, romantic figures emerge like fragments of half-remembered dreams. Each work serves as an emotional map—an invitation to step beyond the familiar and into the sublime beauty found in obscurity, longing, and quiet transformation.

Process

I love the freedom that comes with working in mixed media—I get to play across a wide range of materials, including inks, collage elements, coloured pencils, pastels, spray paint, gold leaf, acrylics, and oils. My more abstract pieces usually evolve intuitively, layer by layer, guided purely by instinct rather than a fixed plan. I tend to favour muted, atmospheric palettes to stir deep emotion and subtle mood—quiet tensions, veiled longings, and contemplative spaces that feel both intimate and expansive. This open-ended process often carries me into uncharted creative territory, where the final piece surprises even me, diverging beautifully from my initial imaginings and revealing unexpected depths and meanings along the way.
